Responding to Japan’s Tragedy

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

All of us at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors are deeply saddened to watch the unfolding tragedy in the wake of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami. Many donors have reached out asking for advice on how best to support the Japanese in their response efforts. As with many natural disasters, we recommend that donors consider longer-term approaches to their funding. Some of the largest needs for rebuilding and recovery emerge after the public attention and news cameras have moved on.

For donors wishing to contribute to ongoing and longer-term recovery efforts, we recommend Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund, which has waived all administrative fees. Give2Asia has also launched a fund to support local Japanese organizations that are responding to the disaster. This fund has a 5% administrative fee. Both organizations have strong networks and relationships in Japan.
